Welcome to Diesel Island Take II

In the first half of the year 2011, the first pioneers who stepped on Diesel Island dreamt of a virgin place where they could forge their own society. What would it be like to start a nation from scratch?

To take what’s great from the countries we know and to ditch what is bad. To re-write the laws. To right social wrongs: the real land of the Stupid and home of the Braves. After settling on the island, the pioneers need to turn the Successful Living philosophy in a set of principles and prescribe their own rules: this is showcased in the new development of the brand’s campaign, the writing of Diesel Island constitution. The Diesel islanders have not lost their hope in fighting for their right to succeed, taking the Be Stupid manifesto of having balls, letting go, creating stuff, throwing it all in the air and seeing where it lands.

The campaign comes to life with a 360° approach. On Diesel’s main site each picture will be featured as a pop-up book, having a different animation, representing one of the laws of the Constitution. Along with the set of laws, the election of a government where social networks serve as polling places: a facebook application, an Island TAB, a YouTube Channel, and digital gadgets on FlickR. Furthermore, a video will be broadcasted across social media sites: a parody of a musical, where the pioneers sing the principles of the Diesel Island Constitution.

On top of it all, the Diesel Island campaign will also be integrated into e-commerce: by clicking on any item, a panel is overlaid, allowing a clear appreciation of the clothes, complete product information and a direct link to buy. The future of the island is yet to be revealed. A small hint along the way: we are f****g it up.

PRESS.PAUSE.PLAY #A film about hope, fear and digital culture

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunites.

But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity?

This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.

The film was shot globally between August 2009 – January 2011, covering more than 150 hours of interview footage with international creatives and thinkers - representing the state of digitized culture today.

The WIELS Project Room presents a new series of paintings and a new installation by artist-in-residency Wafae Ahalouch el Keriasti.

In her drawings, paintings, installations and sculptures, Wafae Ahalouch el Keriasti's (b. 1978, Tanger, MA; lives and works in Amsterdam) reveals a personal vision of our alienated world. History, religion, politics, film, fairy tales, family structures and the media are her most important sources of inspiration, but it's the role of women, from a personal, historical and political viewpoint, that has attracted her attention in recent times. Ahalouch often works by series in which she fuses several stories together and from which new images and stories derive.

Mademoiselle Agnes - Dressed up for winter 2011/2012

In the world of fashion, the majority of womenswear designers are, perhaps surprisingly, men. In this latest instalment of the decade-long series by Mademoiselle Agnès and director Loïc Prigent, some of these men are in crisis. Just days before his latest collection for Dior, John Galliano suffers a dramatic fall from grace, while Christophe Decarnin at Balmain is nowhere to be seen.

But the show must go on!

THERE IS MORE ACTION TO BE DONE TO FIGHT AIDS THAN TO WEAR THIS T-SHIRT BUT IT’S A GOOD START

The charity AIDS T-Shirt has been present in all Maison Martin Margiela collections since Fall/Winter 1994/1995. Each T-Shirt is produced in a different colour with contrasted text every season and bears the text marked below in English.

THERE IS MORE ACTION TO BE DONE TO FIGHT AIDS THAN TO WEAR THIS T-SHIRT BUT IT’S A GOOD START

Further to the seasonal English version, the Maison has decided to have a yearly edition every time in a different language for the World AIDS day. After the previous Japanese edition, we propose this 2nd edition in the French language. Created in Paris, sold around the world, worn touching the heart, this limited edition charity AIDS T-shirt will be exclusively available in all Maison Martin Margiela stores and in the Margiela e-boutique.

So the text becomes :

IL Y A PLUS A FAIRE POUR COMBATTRE LE SIDA
QUE DE PORTER CE T-SHIRT MAIS C’EST UN BON DEBUT

When most T-shirts carry a slogan their message may be read from a distance... dialogue is not necessary. When this T-Shirt is worn it is no longer possible for others to read the text printed on it (most of the text is on the inside at the back of the V-neckline). A dialogue on HIV/AIDS is there encouraged once another asks the wearer to explain what is written on their T-Shirt.

A percentage of the sales is donated to ‘AIDES’, a French non-governmental organization dedicated to fight the HIV and hepatitis virus and take care of patients living with HIV/AIDS and hepatitis (www.aides.org). Over the years, 180,000 T-shirts have been sold and brought a contribution of over 750,000 euros to ‘AIDES’. Unfortunately, the virus is still around and that action is still valid.
