On 18 December, internationally renowned designers and artists Nynke Tynagel and Job Smeets will present their new initiative: their own exposition hall, in the heart Antwerp, where their atelier Studio Job – in addition to an office in the Netherlands – has its home base. The expansive industrial space is located on the ground floor of a former cigar factory on the Begijnenvest, not far from the museum quarter in het Zuid. Under the title The Birth, this first exhibition presents exclusively work by the duo itself. Because,

despite the fact that the style bible Wallpaper crowned them designers of the year, Time Magazine included them in their Top 100 most influential designers, and their work has found its way to museums and collectors the world over, Studio Job remains an unknown in Belgium. The space is also intended to function as a platform and refuge for others: artists, designers, curators, galleries and museums. Just as Smeets (°1970, Hamont-Achel, Belgium) and Tynagel (°1977, Bergeijk, the Netherlands) cannot be reduced to the status of artists or designers, but rather occupy a unique position somewhere between, Studio Job cannot simply be described as a gallery. “Call it a chameleonic space”, says Smeets.

De internationaal spraakmakende ontwerpers en kunstenaars Nynke Tynagel en Job Smeets pakken op 18 december uit met een nieuw initiatief: een eigen expositieruimte, in hartje Antwerpen, waar hun atelier Studio Job, naast een vestiging in Nederland, zijn thuisbasis heeft. De royale industriële ruimte bevindt zich op het gelijkvloers van een voormalige sigarenfabriek op de Begijnenvest, op een  hink- stapsprong van het museumkwartier op het Zuid. Onder de titel The Birth brengt de eerste  tentoon stelling uitsluitend werk van het duo zelf. Want ondanks het feit dat de stijlbijbel Wallpaper hen tot

designers van het jaar kroonde, Time magazine hen in de Top 100 van de meest invloedrijke ontwerpers opnam, en hun werk wereldwijd zijn weg naar musea en verzamelaars vond, bleef Studio Job een onbekende in België. Daarnaast wil de ruimte echter ook als een platform en vrijplaats voor anderen fungeren, kunstenaars, ontwerpers, curatoren, gallerijen en musea. Net zo min als Smeets (°1970, Hamont-Achel, België) en Tynagel (°1977, Bergeijk, Nederland) zich tot de status van kunstenaars of designers laten herleiden, maar ergens tussenin een heel eigen positie innemen, wil Studio Job zich hierbij niet zomaar als een gallerij laten omschrijven. “Noem het een  ruimte, “ zegt Smeets.

Les designers et artistes internationaux Nynke Tynagel et Job Smeets, qui ont fait couler beaucoup d'encre, lèvent le voile le 18 décembre sur une nouvelle initiative: un propre espace d'exposition, situé au coeur d'Anvers, qui accueille leur atelier Studio Job, dont une filiale se trouve aux Pays-Bas.

Le très spacieux espace industriel se situe au rez-dechaussée d'une ancienne usine de cigares sise Begijnenvest, à un jet de pierre du quartier des musées du ‘Zuid’. La première exposition, baptisée The Birth, montre exclusivement l'oeuvre du duo lui-même. Wallpaper, la bible du design, les a consacrés

'designers de l'année'; Time magazine les a repris dans le Top 100 des designers les plus influents; leur oeuvre s'est retrouvée dans les musées et chez les collectionneurs. Malgré toutes ces consécrations, Studio Job restait inconnu en Belgique. L'espace vise cependant à fonctionner également comme une plate-forme et comme un sanctuaire pour d'autres, artistes, designers, curateurs, galeries et musées. A l'instar de Smeets (°1970, Hamont-Achel, Belgique) et Tynagel (°1977, Bergeijk, Pays-Bas) qui ne

se laissent pas docilement cataloguer sous le statut d'artistes ou de designers mais prennent eux-mêmes spontanément leur place quelque part entre ces deux univers, Studio Job ne souhaite pas être décrite trivialement comme une "galerie". “Appelez ça un espace caméléonesque", dit Smeets.
